Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) Information: History and Facilities
After almost a decade of discussions and planning, a site for the current Dulles Airport was chosen in 1958 on the westerly outskirts of Washington, amidst much controversy, since many farm buildings and houses needed to be demolished. In 1962, president John F. Kennedy opened Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), when it became the world's very first airport designed for the usage of jet-powered aircraft. The terminal remains particularly famous for its graceful architecture and stylish curves, inspired by flight itself.

Amongst the passenger amenities found within the main terminal at Washington Dulles Airport are Travelex currency services, Triptel cell phone rental, Smartcarte luggage trolleys and cashpoints operated by the Chevy Chase Bank. Also available is an information counter with travelers aid and paging services, a United Service Organization lounge for military passengers, and interfaith chapel within Concourse B.

Shopaholics at Washington Dulles Airport will be pleased to find innumerable shops, with branches of Borders, CNBC Express, Faber Gifts, Mindworks, Stellar News, Tax and Duty Free all here, along the many restaurants and dining options. The main eateries include Cosi, Cuisine d'Avion, Euro Café, Gordon Biersch, Tidewater Landing and Villa Pizza.
